Lightweight is not same as minimalist, though minimalist shoes are often lighter than traditional trainers. A running shoe can be lightweight and still offer stability, cushioning and motion control, all things that a minimalist shoe tries to get away from.
Lightweight running shoes usually offer less features, and are recommended for the efficient and experienced runner. These shoes are ideal as racing flats and for speed work, but not typically for rigorous training schedules.
It is recommended that you alternate them with a more durable shoe for training purposes and longer distance runs. Many runners have two different types of shoes on hand for this exact reason.
