Lightweight is not same as minimalist, though minimalist shoes are often lighter than traditional trainers. A running shoe can be lightweight and still offer stability, cushioning and motion control, all things that a minimalist shoe tries to get away from.
Lightweight running shoes usually offer less features, and are recommended for the efficient and experienced runner. These shoes are ideal as racing flats and for speed work, but not typically for rigorous training schedules.
It is recommended that you alternate them with a more durable shoe for training purposes and longer distance runs. Many runners have two different types of shoes on hand for this exact reason.
When considering a lighter shoe, it is important to note durability. When a shoe manufacturer is trying to shave off ounces, one of the easiest ways to do that is by reducing the size of the rubber outsoles.
They still provide great traction, but may not stand up to frequent use or tough terrains. This is the main reason that we recommend not relying on lightweight running shoes for training, as you will find yourself replacing them quite regularly.
However, when used properly, lightweight running shoes can be amazing and very effective. In a sport where every ounce matters, you will feel as fast as lightening in any of the options we’ve listed below.
