No matter if you are planning on running a 5K or a full marathon, a running training schedule is the most important thing you can use to prepare for your event!
A running training schedule is quite possibly the most important tool for any aspiring runner. Whether you are starting out with a local 5k race or are an avid marathoner, you can guarantee a great performance simply by having a plan in your training.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed runs around the neighborhood, and was an active participant in cardio classes at the gym. But it always seemed hard to really make progress, and I was uncertain if I would be ready come race day. It was that uncertainty that would keep me up at night, worrying if my legs would give up half way though the race!
After doing some research one night, I realized that running training schedules were not only common amongst serious runners- they were the norm! I immediately digested as much information as I could, and began training for my next race.
From studying schedules recommended by fellow experienced runners, I’ve developed training programs for the 5k, 10k, half marathon, and full marathon. These are the exact schedules that I use before every race.
My recommendation is to find the schedule matching your next race, print it out, and stick it on your refrigerator. This is a great motivational tool, and will guarantee that you reach your running goal.
You will notice that I employ cross training in many of my schedules, which does wonders! Use these days to build strength and stamina while sculpting a different set of muscles. This is perfect for adding variety to your workouts and giving your feet a much needed break at the same time.
Please note that if you personal schedule conflicts with a certain day, you can absolutely modify the overall layout of the running training schedule by switching days (i.e. switch your long run day from Saturday to Sunday).
The most important part is that you choose a plan and stick with it. Invest in yourself little by little everyday and you will be amazed with the long term rewards.
