Stability shoes are suggested for runners with neutral to moderately low arches who, as a result, suffer from mild to moderate overpronation. Pronation is the natural motion of your feet rolling inward during your stride.

This movement is healthy to a certain degree, because it functions as a natural shock absorption system, and allows your feet to handle the repeated impact of your body weight pounding the ground.

People with moderately low arches tend to slightly overpronate, causing your feet to roll inwards too much. This throws off the body’s alignment, and put additional stress on your ankles and joints, which can lead to several injuries, such as stress fractures, knee pain, and plantar fasciitis.

Stability running shoes aid in correcting moderate overpronation by offering a generous amount of medial support, a firm sole, and a little extra cushioning. Look for features like a dual density midsole, medial post, or a diagonal roll bar.

They also have a firm sole, which provide additional arch support. If the outsole is too flexible, it can exacerbate your overpronation and increase your risk of injury.

It’s important to note that stability is not the same as motion control. Stability shoes are geared towards the runner seeking enhanced support for moderate overpronation, whereas motion control shoes are geared more towards runners suffering from severe overpronation. Motion control shoes would be too stiff and restrictive for the mild to moderate overpronator.

Below is our list of the our favorite stability running shoes that are designed with the perfect amount of support and cushioning for your feet.
